TIL when Lawrence Anthony, known as "The Elephant Whisperer", passed away. A herd of elephants arrived at his house in South Africa to mourn him. Although the elephants were not alerted to the event, they travelled to his house and stood around for two days, and then dispersed.

On a sadder note, I watched this horrific video of an elephant being led by a man through a busy plaza. Apparently, this man had been abusing this elephant severely, using it as a means to make money, starving and beating it and showing no love or compassion towards the elephant. This video happened to capture the moment, a security camera it seems, where the elephant saw its moment of escape and mauled the man to death. It literally ripped him in half from the waist down with its legs and tusks, dragging his body over the concrete and smearing his blood and organs all over the ground.

A woman ran over the help the man and the elephant (instead of attacking her as well, because she had never harmed him and he had no quarrel with her) he completely ignored her and continued to stomp the man into the ground like he was dough on a cutting board. The video is absolutely gruesome, but once you learn about the horrific things this man did to this elephant you understand. The elephant was a slave to him, being tortured, abused and starved. It saw it's way out and it revolted, killing him and harming NO other bystander in the process. I feel like a dick saying this but honestly...luckily the elephant was then rescued and is currently living in a wildlife sanctuary where it has shown absolutely no signs of aggression towards any of its caretakers.

Elephants never forget. This elephant had been treated so badly by this man that it had finally had enough and it killed him for it. It wasn't am angry or aggressive elephant, it was simply tortured and wanted a way out. It harmed no other person in the process and to this day it hasn't harmed another person since. That says a lot about them. They remember everything, they feel love and compassion, but they also feel fear and hatred. They truly are incredible creatures, in my opinion, one of the closest beings on this planet to our own feelings and thoughts.
