TIL The Wright Brothers only flew together on the same flight one time, a six-minute flight on May 25th, 1910. They promised their father, Milton, they would never fly together to avoid the chance of a double tragedy and to ensure one brother would remain to continue their flight experiments.

Since you went ahead and revised your comment, I’ll go ahead and respond to your newly-edited passive-aggressive tone and misleading claims.

First of all, you’re cherry picking from this Wikipedia article. That entire article has obviously been written by different people at different time because it contradicts itself.

"Santos-Dumont's 1906 claim to flight has never been seriously disputed, although few authorities credit his as the first, while some have questioned the effectiveness of his controls.

Santos-Dumont’s first flights in 1906 were 60 meters and then 220 meters a few months later, both of which were extremely unstable and had to end because he couldn’t keep the craft from rolling.

Compare that to the Wright’s best flight without a catapult on Huffman Prairie (away from the windy beach) of 400 m two years earlier.

In fact, by 1906:

Each of the three axes – pitch, roll, and yaw – now had its own independent control. These modifications greatly improved stability and control, enabling a series of six dramatic "long flights" ranging from 17 to 38 minutes and 11–24 miles (39 km) around the three-quarter mile course over Huffman Prairie between September 26 and October 5. Wilbur made the last and longest flight, 24.5 miles (39.4 km) in 38 minutes and 3 seconds, ending with a safe landing when the fuel ran out. The flight was seen by a number of people, including several invited friends, their father Milton, and neighboring farmers.

All this was BEFORE Santos-Dumont made his first flights in France. Not only did the Wrights fly first, they also made advancements in control, stability, and flight time. They were literally flying until their gas ran out while Santos-Dumont was barely able to get off the ground and keep his plane level.

although both the use of a launch trolley and lack of aerodynamic stability meant that acceptance of the first flight claim was not universal

The “launch trolley” was a cart that ran along a rail. Their plane sat on top. Rolling on a cart versus wheels during takeoff has nothing to do with the legitimacy of the flight. Back then news traveled slowly and there was a lot of arguing, but no one outside of Brazil questions their accomplishment today.

Brazil still officially regards Santos-Dumont as the first successful aviator because his craft did not use an external launch system

AKA Brazil purposely perpetuates a lie. There was no “external launch system.” There was no catapult until late 1904.

In the end, both contributed a lot to aviation and US and Brazil can be proud of them. It is kind of sad that Santos Dumond isn't mentioned on US education while Wright brothers are in Brazilian education (at least trying to explain what both were doing and how they compare).

Maybe because ultimately, Santos-Dumont’s real ground-breaking contributions were to the advancement of lighter-than-air craft like dirigibles which did not go on to become a dominant mode of transportation. He was extremely popular in his own time, owing to the fact that he was very wealthy and had performed spectacular feats with zeppelins. Europe heaped praise on him because they were unaware of what the Wrights had actually accomplished across the Atlantic and because he was a celebrity. He spent most of his life in France, flew in France, and was regarded by Europe as European.

As you can see from the downvotes, Americans prefer to insist in being ignorant and not even wanting to understand why there is a debate, and who was all these other people that were extremely important in yhe history of aviation, nor respecting someone who tried to explain it, because "U-S-A! U-S-A!".

Is this your first day on Reddit? People here love bashing the US, including the Americans. The reason you’re getting downvoted is that it’s you who is choosing to remain ignorant, and it is you who is disregarding documented historical facts for nationalistic reasons.
