TIL Ypsilanti, Michigan is named after a Hero in the Greek War of Independence, Demetrios Ypsilantis.

In truth, he's not really a hero. He became a symbol of the revolt in the west, mostly because he was of noble birth. His brother was a hero, a veteran of the napoleonic wars and leader of the secret society that helped spark the revolt who died in Wallachia, then this guy landed in Greece with his entourage, tried to rired his brothers fame and more or less intended to make himself king but very few people took him seriously because they thought he was a foreigner with very very limited poltical or a martial abillities. He found some support because of his name, and they kept him around because, again his name was good PR with the west, namely Russia but he didnt do much.
