The technical capability is practically already here. For comparison, the number thrown around is that Visa does around 1700 transactions per second (TPS) on average. Stock market will of course need a lot more than that though. Now I'm not too up to date on all that's happening but; one of the bigger projects does 65000+ TPS and can expand if need be. A coming update to the second most popular project will be in the tens of thousands if all goes well. There are other projects boasting millions of TPS. And then there are all these other second layer projects being worked on. There is no doubt in my mind that we will see stock market adoption to some degree in the coming years.
