The TIME and EASE of language mastery highly exaggerated?

A few years ago I was enrolled in a local university studying linguistics. I dropped out after a few weeks due to some personal problems but I still followed my peers in social media.

Well guess what after just ONE year most of them had something like "languages spoken: Spanish, French, Latin" in their bios.

Even though by that time the French classes had barely started, and Latin only lasted a semester and covered some basic grammar.

To me, "learning" a language is at the very least getting something like a C1 certificate and being able to express pretty much any idea that you can express in your mother tongue.

So yeah, I take it with a grain of salt.
