Tips for keeping my characters fresh?

This is why I love personality profiling systems so much ;)

When people hear about D&D Alignment, a common response is "you can't reduce billions of unique individuals into just what fits into 9 boxes," and the 16 MyersBriggs categories get a similar response.

Except that if you look at a person's MyersBriggs and Alignment types at the same time, then you suddenly have 144 combinations that can be compared and contrasted in 6 different ways ;)

Luke Skywalker, for example, I would say is a Neutral Good INFP:

  • he's neither noticeably authoritarian nor noticeably antiauthoritarian (Neutral)

  • he's incredibly selfless (Good)

  • he tends to keep to himself when he doesn't have to work with others to do something (I)

  • he looks at everything in terms of grand big-picture narratives (N)

  • he's extremely sensitive in his relationships with others (F)

  • and he tends to be loose and flexible in how he plans ahead (P)

Whereas most versions of Superman are Lawful Good ISFP/ISFJ:

  • more authoritarian than Luke (Lawful)

  • just as selfless (Good)

  • just as self-contained (I)

  • more focused on down-to-Earth practicalities (S) as opposed to philosophical abstraction

  • and just as sensitive (F)

  • though I don't get a clear impression on whether he tends to be as flexible and spontaneous as Luke (P) or if he tends to be more organized and methodical (J)

If these systems look interesting to you, can you think of how it could be interesting to write your character with a different type than Luke and Superman (maybe a Lawful Good ENTP, or a Chaotic Good ESTJ)?

If the concept of profiling systems looks interesting, but if these specific systems don't interest you, then might you be interested in trying different ones instead?
