Tips for starting a band (finding members, booking shows, recording process, etc.)

Here are some tips I've learned over the course of the years.

Finding members:

  • Try to find people who are at least as good as you are. It's much easier to learn and be motivated when you have people to look up than to drag people along with you who just don't play in the same ballpark, skill-wise.
  • Make sure you want the same thing. I mean musically and career-wise. Even if you get along perfectly, you'd have to share a common vision, both of the sound, the songwriting and the whole image. Make sure you have the same goals for the future. One person shooting for world fame while the other just wants a fun pastime without much commitment is a disaster waiting to happen.
  • Chemistry is important. Even if you're a great fit musically, if you don't get along or like each other, it's not going to work. You're potentially going to spend a lot of time together and there will be tension.

Craigslist, musician boards, local message boards or "find a band member" websites are great places to start looking. Hang up flyers in local music shops, music schools and

Booking shows:

  • Network, network, network. I've gotten 90 % of my gigs through personal connections. As FlyingWhaleCar said, try and connect with as many musicians as possible. Meet new people and try to become part of the local music scene.
  • Have a tech rider ready. A tech rider is a sheet that basically states what the venue needs to provide to you for you to play
  • Be reliable. Word of mouth travels fast. If you're set to arrive at the venue at 5 PM, arrive at 4:45.
  • Be professional. Even if you're just playing in front of twenty people, treat every gig like you're headlining Coachella. Be professional in your communication and writing.
