Tips for transitioning into DS form a QA position?

I am in a similar position as you. I graduated with a degree in DS, but am currently in QA-testing (about to go deeper in automation). I have been in talks with my manager / boss about transitioning into the more data-centric roles of the company, but have to wait a set period of time before applying. While in this waiting period, I have been watching and doing data science courses through online web services (Udemy, etc.) to help boost my knowledge.

For your company, are there any projects which you can help test to become more acquainted with databases? Such as running queries for data validation? Also is your company big enough, that you can reach out and network to the analytics department, asking questions about what they do and maybe lend time to assist them? By being able to run complex queries, with software such as MS-SQL or Oracle, is a good tick on the CV/Resume. By networking with your analytics department, taking the first step in showing initiative can help you laterally move into the field instead of having to apply externally. Have you talked with your boss / manager about possibly doing a lateral transition? I assume, because you are a new college grad, they would be more than willing to help you with shaping your career (my company encourages that anyway).
