Titanfall 2 Deserves Your Attention

I do like the Battlefield series a lot...it was never tight enough or balanced enough to be a competitive game but as an experience it's still pretty unique. It's chaotic and you'll die to random shit, but it feels like it fits with the philosophy of the game. I find BF1 to be more refreshing precisely because it's open and slower. I just wish every class had access to a bolt-action rifle.

I really hated when CoD went modern and got filled with stupid shit like killstreaks and perks and cruise missiles and fucking airstrikes and all that other nonsense. CoD 1 and 2 were both really tight games that actually worked competitively, so it was kind of jarring to go from that to the dudebro clusterfuck the series is now.

CS I never got into but I respect it and understand that it's probably the only "current" FPS that works competitively.

Overwatch and TF2 I liked for a period of time...TF2 longer. They really ruined TF2 for me when they started adding so many fucking weapons. Overwatch is fun but I have some pretty huge problems with it. It's a game full of characters and game modes that aren't really well-suited for competitive play at all, but it essentially still tries to have a super competitive format. Still, it was really fun to play with a few friends...if WoW hadn't launched their expansion I'd probably still play it.

Tribes isn't a recent shooter unless you count Ascend, but it's easily my favorite FPS series. I feel like T1 and T2 classic ruined all other shooters for me.
