Todd Haley done in Pittsburgh

Perennial playoff teams don’t really change their coaching staff too much. You got BB and Tomlin who have been the very definition of perennial playoff contenders, us (until recently) Andy Reid has been in KC for a while, The titans HC who’s name I can’t spell, mike malarkey(?) has been there for a couple seasons although now gone for some stupid reason, so Jacksonville and the bills this year don’t have reoccurring HCs. Neither of them perennial playoff contenders.

Those perennial playoff teams tend not to change up their coaching staffs because they are competing and making the playoffs. But even when they do, they're still looking to improve and are willing to cut loose underperforming coaches if they feel they're not reaching their potential (see: Haley).

But when most of these teams do underperform, they're willing to make changes. The Seahawks missed the playoffs this year for the first time in 6 years and instead of patting themselves on the back for being competitive most years, Pete Carroll made big changes at OC, DC, and the O-Line coaching positions. It was long overdue itself but McCarthy canned Dom Capers this offseason. If we want to look at how good teams operate, then maybe we should actually borrow a page from their books and start holding bad coaches accountable.

Meanwhile, we've made the playoffs once in the past 5 years but for some reason still talk about ourselves as a perennial contender and name ourselves in the same breath as the Pats and Steelers when trying to justify our unwillingness to seek outside help/improvement. The best we can say about our coordinator is that they're 'adequate' on a good day. That's what complacency and an inflated sense of accomplishment gets you.
