TOMORROW'S FRONT PAGE, FT: City abandons hope of free access to the single market.

My point was that I don't agree people care more about shut borders and sovereignty than the economy. For one thing, people's dislike of immigration is tied to the perceived economic impact - people believe that immigration takes away job opportunities from locals and drives down wages. This is a major reason people are against EU immigration, and they believe reducing immigration will lead to greater prosperity of the existing nationals.

Even ignoring that. it's easy to say certain things are more important when the economy is doing alright. In the event of a serious recession caused by a hard Brexit, in which people who voted leave lost their jobs, a large number of people would get cold feet very quickly. When an economy starts to tank, it is always the most important issue because it has the most direct impact on everyone's lives. If that were to happen, it would very likely be too late to alter any of the deals reached, at least in the short term. If the tories were unable to fix it before a GE, which will have to come by 2020 at the latest, people would look to a different party to try something different (or at least a party that would say they would try something different).
