Tony Gonzalez was thisclose to being a Packer

I remember this well. It was 2008.

Anyway Packers looked like a team on the rise with Rodgers/Jennings/Driver on O. Woodson, Harris, Tramon at CB, Collins at S, Kampman/Jenkins at DE, Jolly/Pickett at DT.

Packers started 3-3. They had some good wins, but also a painful loss in Tampa where the Packers had the lead, Rodgers left with a separated shoulder, only to have to try to come back in when they lost the lead and Flynn looking like he should not be on the football field. They also lost Cullen Jenkins for the season with a torn pec that game, which sucked as he looked absolutely unblock-able at the start of that year.

So going to the 2008 trade deadline, Gonzalez was asking for a trade and the Packers were one of the teams he wanted to go to. Packers had Donald Lee and Finley at TE already. However, I think Finley had an early season meltdown (maybe vs. Tampa?). IIRC correctly he wasn't playing much, but the Packers would split him wide as a possible jump ball/fade target. They basically never went to him, and then the one time they did, Rodgers made a bad throw. After he threw a fit, I think he was in the doghouse for the rest of the season.

So Gonzalez seemed like a great fit while Finley seasoned some more, and Lee being a decent #2. The Packers went after him, met the Chiefs offer of a #2, had filed paperwork with the league office. All set to go and the dickhead Peterson upped the offer at a point where it was impossible to do anything even if the Packers wanted to offer a 1st.
