I took my boyfriend to a Great Lake for the first time in his life and he couldn't believe how much it looked like the ocean! Lake Michigan, Michigan [3442x4819] [OC]

My cousins from Colorado had the exact same reactions when they saw a Lake Michigan and I just didn't understand it until one day when I saw one of the huge massive Lake tankers sitting offshore because the port of Milwaukee and Chicago were apparently having issues. I remember going for a run that December morning wearing just a t-shirt and shorts because it was cold but it wasn't that cold but then again I'm from Wisconsin so my definition of cold is vastly different from everyone else's. I saw a small launch boat coming from one of the tankers towards the shore and ran down to meet them turns out it was a crew full of Russians. Apparently the Coast Guard had to given them permission to bring it in since they were waiting on the other ports and were getting a little bit bored but their reaction was kind of funny when they saw me. "Aren't you cold?" they asked, I responded "No why?" followed by "it's absolutely freezing here" and then I shrugged "where did you guys come?" he laughed and replied "Arctic Circle!". Friendliest bunch of guys I've ever met took them to one of the restaurants by the river to get some coffee and food.

You can live next to something that big your entire life and still never truly comprehend how huge and amazing it is until someone from outside your little world drops by and tells you.
