The top of r/conservative right now. Ironic given the sentiment around BLM on that subreddit.

The civil rights movement did great things to advance equality, they took the licks, fought the system and ultimately won.

Its not surprising that so many want to emulate them, their struggle, grit, and perseverance.

Only problem is, there is far more demand then supply for racism these days. This leads to a redefining of the struggle where things are pushed further. Away from mlks vision of equality between the races, and towards equity.

Equity is a double edged sword. It’s obvious how ideas of equity hurt those on the losing end.

Less obvious is how it hurts those it professes to help by labeling them incompetent to compete in a world of equals. Back in the old days it used to be “white mans burden” but nowadays it’s just equity.

Understanding the difference is key to understanding why people venerate MLK and the civil rights movement.

They preached love between people, bridging the gaps of our understanding, and most importantly judgement on the basis of ones character, rather then the color of their skin.
