I did something like this, but reverse haha.

Family in Montreal, post-doc west from Toronto on the side of the 401, somewhere...

I had an apartment over there. I traveled often but maybe not weekly, but I was remote from my family two weeks a month approx.

Often, I rented a car (pick at Montreal, drop over there) and use carpooling like Kangaride to help pay for the ride.

Also using Megabus+Greyhound when I was too tired, or not feeling like driving 5 hour that day.

But ultimately, it is not very sustainable, but I had no choices, sometime positions are where they are, right! Anyway, I was very eager to find a position where I would be with my family most of the time. It is costly to have two apartments, and all the traveling, would not recommend.
