Toxic masculinity on full display in Winnipeg’s hockey culture

The title doesn’t say “here is an example of some hockey players who act like pieces of shit.”

It says Toxic Masculinity on Full Display In Winnipeg’s Hockey Culture.

I don’t know what else to tell you other than pointing that out.

Seems like whenever there is a progressive agenda to push it suddenly becomes okay to make large sweeping generalizations about people that share interests / live somewhere / drive certain kinds of vehicles / listen to certain kinds of music / insert mundane thing here.

I think of all the parents who donate their time to help coach hockey teams, all the kids who learn about team work and discipline and have some fun through the enjoyment of game. So when I hear stupid garbage descriptions of it that are meant to “catch the attention” of the reader (read: make ad revenue by capitalizing on outrage) it pisses me off.

I played hockey growing up, I loved it when it was good. The only time it was bad was when you had some huge douchebag on your team that treated other people like shit, and bullied and insulted people. There were girls on our teams sometimes and they probably got more than their fare share of shit too.

But it’s not a Winnipeg problem or a hockey culture problem, it’s a people problem. I’m sick of hearing people shit on everything and everyone to push their agenda.

The dialogue around Grapes and his stupid comments was more of the same horseshit. “Hockey players are mean white boys” versus “there’s nothing wrong with saying bigoted shit on a national broadcast.” You’re both wrong, and further the golden rule of discourse is shut the fuck up about something you don’t know anything about.
