‘Toy Story 4’ Will Not Be a Direct Sequel to ‘Toy Story 3’

I think it being geared towards children is more than justification for it. It's a children's film. People seem to think that something can only be good if it's suitable for kids and adults. That is not the case (and even so, I think there are plenty of grown-up issues going on in Frozen). Frozen has great music, complex relationships and it departs from the traditional ideas in many Disney films of the princess characters only being able to find true love in the prince (in fact that whole idea is completely subverted in the film). It's about sisterly love instead and girls finding meaning and happiness in their relationships with each other, which I think is great. In that way, the film marks a change in the Disney approach to their female characters, while also staying true to the Disney spirit. It looks absolutely beautiful too. The only other film I can think of in Pixar's repertoire that looks as stunning is parts of Wall-E. I think the backlash against Frozen is simply due to how phenomenally popular it has been. If that film hadn't been such a huge hit, I don't think it would have half as many detractors.

I also don't think Brave is a great film in its own right. Even without the Pixar tag, it's not a great film. It is impossible to even apply logic to parts of the storyline and it's so slow and kind of anti-climactic. In fact, I think Frozen handles the similar themes of princesses defying expectations in a much better way. MU is absolutely all over the place, story-telling wise.

Therein lies the problem with Pixar at the moment, for me. They haven't told a compelling, original story in years, something they used to do with ease. Inside-Out fills me with some hope for a return to form, but the thought of more revisits to parts of the Pixar universe that we've seen plenty of before doesn't exactly thrill me.
