Toyota Made Its Key Fob Remote Start Into a Subscription Service

Subscription models are getting out of control. It started so well with actually useful services, such as the ones allowing you to stream all the media you want. Actually nice and consumer-friendly. Until everyone started making their own services and suddenly "all the media" became "some pieces of media".

Then it moved to software you could previously purchase and own. Not so nice, because even though it may appear more affordable, the cost quickly adds up. Furthermore, now the same software mandates internet connectivity and will be made unusable the very moment you stop paying. And if the servers go down, you can no longer use the product at all.

And now we are seeing hardware you already purchased being intentionally criped by the subscription fees. Car features are but one example. Health trackers, such as Oura ring or Fitbit bands that you pay for now not only collect your data, but also keep said data hostage. The hardware you paid for is capable of doing everything it needs to - it just won't if you dont continue paying.

We are not talking about some dystopian future - it's a shitty reality already. I really wish people stopped supporting this, but I feel it's too late already.
