I would say work really hard in your current position (good stats, punctuality, be pleasant to work with) and definitely speak with your manager about deploying to NCR. I work out east and am happy there for the moment as I’ve made my way to a position off the phones but I’ve had many colleagues who didn’t like the call centre agent position and were able to easily transfer to an equivalent position off the phone in the NCR in the same ministry as there are more opportunities there. It was done quite easily and quickly actually. It seems like it’s an option as long as your willing to move but since the city I’m in is more vibrant than Ottawa many hesitate to do it even if it means advancing in their careers.
