Questions for Transgender People

  1. How did you find out you were transgender?
I always knew to some degree that I want "really" a girl, but it took my being social and having a really bad span of months with dissociative issues for me to realize that it was all caused by a disconnect with my own body and that in order to resolve it, I had to transition.

  2. How old were you then?
    18

  3. How did your family react when you’ve told them?
Horribly. I've been medically transitioning for over a year, and they have not even once tried to use the correct name and pronouns and have been incredibly emotionally manipulative to guilt me into stopping my transition. They don't understand that their options are me as a male or me as a dead person.

  4. How did your friends react when you’ve told them?
They were not the least bit surprised.

  5. How did your community react when you’ve told them?
I didn't really tell my community. I let them figure it out.

  6. If you haven’t told any of #3-5, what is your reason?
I haven't told #5 because it's honestly not their business. I'm a private person. I barely share secrets even with my friends. Telling medical information to an onslaught of people would make me too vulnerable.

  7. Have you began to transition?
    Yes.
    -If so, how far into:
-Social transitioning: Fully, except in my family because they are unsupportive.
-Physical transitioning: Have been taking hormones for 1 year. No surgeries yet.

  8. What difficulties have you experienced so far while transitioning?
-Emotional: I've been struggling with a sense of loss, with my family, with my birth name which has a lot of family history, with my past.
-Physical: Playing with my dose--it was way too high in the beginning and caused mood issues.
    -Social: None.
    -Spiritual (optional): N/A

  9. What would you consider as your main struggle as a MTF/FTM transgender?
Trying to reconcile my concept of myself as a man with my past, my worldview, my body, etc. How to be queer and normative at the same time.

  10. If there is something that you’d like to say to others about your identity, what would you like to tell them?
Don't be so concerned with what genitals people have.
