Translation request: Two pages from a 1963 travel journal

It's a collection of short thoughts about life, some are popular sayings either from Western or Arabic literature. The person who wrote this must have been interesting and very cultivated. Do you mind sharing the story behind this diary page?

1- He who struggled a pure struggle for a noble cause can't be considered a failure even if he didn't succeed.
2- Once, one sage looked at a woman crucified on a tree, and said: If only every tree could bear a fruit like this.
3- It's better for you to to throw a rock carelessly than do it with a word.
4- The great person is who's great in his misfortune, and great while bound to chains.
5- "Shiodor" (?) said: I still respect the Filippino popular saying, "the tight-lipped mouth doesn't get entered by flies".
6- Christopher Morley said: You won't be a good talker until you get used to excelling at listening.
7- Bernard Shaw said: The man can fail repeatedly in his work, but he's not considered a failure of a man until he starts shifting blame to others.
8- Chivalry/Righteousness is to NOT do in secret something you'd be ashamed of doing in public.
9- Someone said once: One can build for oneself a throne out of spears, but he won't be able to sit on it. (author stroked it off the list)
10- Henry Freudrick Emile (?) said: If one is hating/cursing onself, his hate of people becomes more intense. (author stroked it off the list)
10- The disease which blinded brought despair to doctors: the vulgar tongue and the faulty brain, and the worst disease-like of diseases is attracting scorn without any useful return.
