Trevon Duval Is Not Done Yet

Trevon Duval fan here.

Several years ago when he was getting plenty of love + attention/hype from Ballislife, I assumed he was going to be one of those PG's that really just explode and grab your attention. He also had a great year in 2017 attending events like McDonald's All-American, Hoop Summit, and Jordan Brand Classic, it was hard to dispute that he would've ended up being a bust or even going undrafted to this day.

I briefly followed him during his time spent with the Duke, but couldn't stomach my hatred for Duke long enough to endure his mindless straight line drives with quite literally the worst basketball IQ I've ever seen from a PG. I always knew his basketball IQ when he was younger wasn't the brightest, but I always figured he'd improve and develop that weakness because his leaping ability, tools, and athleticism was probably one of the best I had ever seen.

But, I don't think you guys could comprehend.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone with the worst basketball IQ, he even makes Javale McGee look intelligent with how awful he ran the offense.... Loose handle, can't run a simple offense, lazy and gambles for steals on defense, lacks basic fundamentals, footwork is meh, his athleticism is unrivaled, this guy can JUMP. But G O D D A M N, his shot looks like it was somehow cultivated in a land far far far away that somehow had ancient historical records of what a jump shot looked like and tried to copy it.

Do I think Duval has a place in today's NBA? Maybe. But he's going to literally improve literally everything that makes a basketball player great. And that's a problem.

PG's are one of the most stacked positions in the league, and there is an endless revolving door of hidden talent that can get discovered or quickly picked up by sly and shrewd GM's. Shooting 59.6% on FT, 29% from 3, and basically scoring under 10 PPG in the G-League probably isn't going to push the needle.

Duval's clear weaknesses are amplified immensely in today's NBA. Teams aren't going to pay for PG's that cannot shoot, let alone someone who has terrible basketball IQ.

I also think he probably should've stayed one more year at Duke.

tl;dr

Duval averages 6.9 PPG in the G-League, still looks raw, had shooting splits of 42/29/59 in college, and currently has a shooting form that would probably make Simmons cringe. I don't think he's done yet, but he's like a million miles away at this point.
