A Tribute to Husbands Everywhere

one of my most humbling realisations came when sat on an uncomfortable chair waiting for my then girlfriend to try on a pair of shoes.

It was early december and i'd just got back from tour, so i had the cash to burn and was happy to just spend whatever time i could with the people i cared about. So decided to treat the better half to a trip to Harrods, way out of my price range but as a one off it was kinda fun to don a smart shirt and just pretend for a day.

so I end up sitting on one of the plush stools watching her run around like a kid in candy shop trying on all sorts of shoes that cost more than my entire wardrobe. Besides me theres this middle aged man, maybe 55, but wearing a scruffy t-shirt, shorts and a pair of sandals... and a big shiny manacle of a rolex.

After a few minutes of awkward silence while we both try and perch on the same bench, he finally starts talking. Turns out he was american and had a fair bit of property behind him; so the real deal, an honest to god rich person that still hasn't seen through my disguise.

and thats when it hits me, he's more than twice my age, from a completely different country from the polar opposite walk of life and yet we're both fighting for bum space on the same chair because some things in life are just constants... rich or poor, in a relationship you just are going to spend hours sat on uncomfortable chairs feigning interest in a dozen different pairs of shoes you can barely tell the difference between.
