Tried to pan fry chicken and almost set off every fire detector, help?

You don’t have to know how to cook at all to go to a store and ask why you would pay more money for a product that is the same. Extra virgin is much more expensive than other olive oils and other oils in general. That leads me to believe that either this person doesn’t buy their own food (is a teenager etc) or has money to blow and is a fledgling college student. The former may want to have supervision when deep frying something for the first time, because I’ve known straight up fucking adults that have burned their houses down in oil fires. The latter, which does make more sense given “apartment,” means that he should probably not start with a difficult task like deep frying chicken. Maybe start with experimenting with spices and sautéing, learning what oils to use, etc. You can learn from experience what to use without even knowing the words “smoke point.”

Bottom line is that deep frying is something that should be done when you have enough experience with oils and cooking in general, because it can be outright dangerous. It’s not a beginner skill. So if this person is that much of a novice, it’s time to learn basic stuff and go back to the drawing board.
