Tried to go red at home. Got hot roots instead - neither are the shade I want. How do I fix this?

Definitely a stylist could help. In my experience, red is hard to dye over. If you can't go to a professional, if I were you, I would do a conditioning treatment every day for a week, and then do a soap cap. Just mix shampoo with bleach and put up in a processing cap (if you don't have a processing cap, pick a pack up, very cheap, and they are awesome over conditioning treatments or even for an overnight treatment). When you see your hair looking more light orange than red, rinse. (I like to then apply a ton of coconut oil, since it doesn't seem to affect the dye, but my hair feels much healthier.) This process might help lessen the effect of the hot roots, but if it doesn't, you can always do it again, applying the shampoo/bleach with a brush and avoiding the hot root area. Then apply your hair dye again. I think this would work for you; this method has worked very well for me in the past. Just be patient and remember to give your hair extra TLC in the meantime. If you can, to mitigate some damage, avoid heat styling for a while
