Trip to Austin Texas

Not sure what time of year you’re going but I used to live in Austin and I was a professional food critic there.

Fun things in no particular order:

Outdoor:

  • Barton Springs (outdoor natural cold spring, beautiful and refreshing)
  • NLand Surf Park (outdoor surf school with gigantic manmade wave pool)
  • Rally Ready Driving School (dirt course, learn how to do stunt driving and rally driving)
  • Hamilton Grotto (beautiful waterfall and bright blue pool beneath. Reservation required)
  • Jacob’s Well (another spring - look up photos, super clear water and fun to jump into. Again, reservations required)
  • Mount Bonnell (short walk up some stairs for a beautiful view out over the Colorado River)
  • The Boardwalk (Boardwalk along Lady Bird Lake. Great views of downtown from here)

Indoor:

  • Austin Central Library (gorgeous new library in downtown Austin)
  • Urban Axes (indoor axe throwing. You can bring your own beer!)
  • Two-step lessons at the White Horse Bar on Tuesdays (the two-step is a quintessentially Texan dance and easy to learn the basics. Go on a Friday night to see the experts do it, it’s so much fun)

Restaurants:

  • Bouldin Creek, Walton’s, Phoebe’s Diner, Tiny Boxwoods, or Jacoby’s for brunch
  • Launderette (contemporary with French influences), Musashino (Sushi), Clark’s Oyster Bar (seafood), Sway (Thai), Curra’s (Mexican), Pho Please (Vietnamese), Red Ash (Italian), Patrizi’s (incredible fresh pasta, food truck in a charming setting), Justine (French, sexy and romantic), Jeffrey’s (old school American, classy), or Via313 (Detroit-style Pizza) for dinner
  • Best bakeries: Capital City, Easy Tiger
  • Best food trucks: Veracruz (best tacos in the city), Paperboy (breakfast), Arlo’s (incredible vegan junk food), The Big Kahuna (poke/Hawaiian)
