OBL and AQ were against the US following the First Gulf War. When Saddam invaded Kuwait and threatened Saudi Arabia, OBL went to Saudi Arabia and basically said 'Let the Mujaheddin and other Muslims protect you from Saddam, don't invite the US and other non-Muslims into Saudi Arabia..." Saudi Arabia told him to fuck off and invited the US and other non-Muslims in to defend them.

On that same note, OBL and his cohorts were against the US just for being western long before the US made any kind of stink in the Middle East. I don't remember the exact wording, but in many of his early videos his resentment of the west in general starts with Britain/France fucking up the Middle East in the wake of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after WW1, which was also the last Caliphate (the Ottoman Caliphate).
