Trump considering ending trade with any country that does business with North Korea, including ending trade with China.

As our number one trading partner, we do about 10 billion dollars of trade with China every single day. If the US decided to "stop all trade" with China over the span of a few months, the resulting shock to prices in America would certainly throw us into an economic tailspin that would be on par with the Great Depression. Backbone retailers like Walmart would have to close down and/or drastically shift supply chains for 80%+ of their inventory, which could literally leave large swaths of the country without basic necessities for months. Safely shifting away from trade with China would take at least a decade, and even that could easily be considered too fast and costly. The economic damage of such a policy would outlast his presidency and the policy would almost certainly be cancelled by his immediate successor.

It is openly a move that he couldn't/wouldn't make, just like first-striking North Korea or making Mexico pay for the wall. He is the one who is fearmongering here, or "talking a big game" depending on how you look at it, because that is his idea of a good negotiating tactic.
