Trump denies calling Meghan Markle 'nasty' despite comments being recorded

One thing I'm not really getting... Okay. I don't support Trump. I really do not.

In my upbringing, old-fashioned as it was, whenever someone said something rude about another's character, they were said to be being nasty, any justification for or attitude behind the comments being ignored. I myself have never used this expression in this context, but it is how I understand it.

But perhaps this is how Trump intended it. Again, this is speaking from my upbringing, how people around me talked when I was growing up.

I have read elsewhere (even the comments here, off this link) that this kind of talk is 'mental gymnastics' from Trump supporters. Again, I am not a Trump supporter and this explanation just came naturally to me, because of my upbringing. Should I feel bad for this?
