New Advent, the source for that citation, is a very authoritative source no matter if you're secular, Catholic, Protestant, or whoever. I look forward to reading it, and I concede the point (in part).

It should also be said that Tetzel's own immediate superiors were in on the racket.

And there certainly exists corruption like that (and worse) in the Church today — especially wherever there is a mutually-beneficial understanding between a corrupt cleric and his superior and/or subordinate.

So much rot is suspended in place by a circle of dirty clerics with guns to eachothers' heads, ready at the drop of a widebrimmed round hat to assassinate eachothers' character.

Many theorize that it is some wild socialist conspiracy of ideology at work — and in describing some useful idiots, they are indeed correct about that. But beyond that, it is a conspiracy of survival.

I hope I can say that the worst of it is behind us, but I'm not even sure who "us" even is these days.

I think for all of us —for the whole world— things are going to be very bad very soon. I feel trapped and scared like an animal.
