Trump says Abraham Lincoln 'did good' for the Black community but that 'the end result' is 'questionable'

Since it looked like he was gonna fuck over reconstruction while he was doing in Louisiana during the Civil War (New Orleans was captured very early on), yes. And if you mean becoming a villain by retrospective standards by people who don’t know anything about him beyond his name (the standard American and redditor).

He never actually had a personal opposition to slavery, and it looked like he wanted to help slave owners retain their massive wealth. During the war, he told black delegates visiting Washington D.C. that blacks and whites couldn’t coexist with one another and started an experimental colony that was abandoned in 1864. He changed his mind over slavery only because of the civil war. Britain had the strong potential in getting involved on behalf of the Confederates, but because Britain was very abolitionist the Emancipation Proclamation put an end to that as a possibility. British were mostly indifferent to the war, but the British cabinet had conspiracy attempts at getting involved since the Confederate states at the time sourced a wealth of cotton. The Emancipation Proclamation also readily increased the number of Black troops and rebellious slaves. Make no mistake Lincoln was a pragmatic, not a lover of black people. Majority of Unionists did not fight the civil war to end slavery.
