Seems like space everywhere is controlled and stacked up against authors promoting their books.

The rules, while obviously not perfect, are in place for obvious reasons... Ever been annoyed by advertising, cold calls, spam? Ever been to any tourist destination in Asia or Africa? ... Having people hassle you everywhere to buy stuff sucks!

And importantly, it's low effort/return ratio... you are wasting time best spent elsewhere. You want to concentrate your time/effort on stuff that works: there is a reason we don't see little book stalls in unrelated places, but we see tons of them in conventions/bookstores/libraries...
