If you can't afford a trainer (or want to start out on your own and get consistent with going before committing a bunch of money), there are a couple of things I'd recommend:

1) In terms of cardio, I have found interval training to be the most effective for me in terms of fat loss, as opposed to steady state. So doing like 1 minute of high intense activity, followed by 1 or 2 minutes of rest/light activity (based on conditioning), and repeat for 20-30 minutes. Many people do this on the treadmill by doing like 30 seconds to 1 minute of something less than a sprint, but more than a jog, followed by 1 to 2 minutes of a very light jog to catch your breath. You can also do something similar on the elliptical, stepmill/stairmaster, etc. by basically upping speed/resistance for that working period, and lessening the speed/resistance for the recovery period.

2) In terms of lifting, I would start on bodybuilding.com. They have a ton of different lifting programs varying in terms of not only begginner/intermediate/advanced, but also in the types of workouts you're doing based on the equipment you have available to you.

If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me. I'm not a trainer or anything like that, but played sports all throughout high school into college, and have been very into fitness ever since I stopped playing sports.
