It depends on what you want to do. I'd say the ones that are skip-able are probably: * conclave - The education system is a nice touch and managing vassals can be fun at first, but it becomes easy, and once you start to manage intrigue it gets easy to pretty much keep them neutered via kidnapping and murders. * the republic - great if you want to play as a republic, but republics at least in my experience don't add much to the base game. Republics are also kind of boring. They're also buggy, and I've noticed a huge increase in crashes when I'm playing with them. * sunset invasion - Aztec stuff has nice flavor events, but unless you're right next to them they don't really add anything. They can also be a straight up game ender if they decide that you're currently living in rightful Aztec clay in their initial invasion. * probably reaper's due - Reapers due is honestly my favorite expansion that can be skipped. I really love what it adds to the game, but the random disease outbreaks can be annoying and they don't add much to the game aside from flavor.
