[tw: muh schedule, secret eating, motivational speeches] literally a gays worst nightmare

Hope this doesn’t bore you but you made me think more about the challenges of open source food: I hear you about your scepticism about releasing the ingredients and process. As we have learned from the Linux/Android/Google revolution, companies like Google play nice at first but only so well as they grow in popularity. When a company gets that big and stable with a mass of consumers who don't understand their power, it start to think they have a licence to do what they want. If people were more informed we could have more power as consumers. This is vital in my view. I think we all need to start to take an interest in pubic commons and public resources. As a side note, you may actually be surprised to learn that you may be using Linux more than you think. It's in every Android device (and every one of the many next gen phone/tablets with new OS's), most smart tv's, many car dash screens, some game systems an lots of embedded stuff like store displays even the stock exchange and most companies that deal with big data. It also basically runs the infrastructure of the Internet along with other open source projects. The idea of something like a self driving car running on Windows is just scary and so far they don't thank goodness. Sorry, I don't mean to change the subject but if you use it or not, it is responsible for pushing the entire world of technology into a new era of innovation. However the models that govern open source companies like Ubuntu (a fledgling desktop/phone os company) only work to keep those companies in line if people are informed of what their rights are and that they have a choice to easily ditch the company and pick up an alternative with minimal effort if they stop working in the interest of the users. Ill get back to food trust me... So Ubuntu needs to publish the source code they write for all of their core software to appease the community and to be allowed to borrow code from other sources (re-sharing is a requirement of using the huge repository of free code from the community they build upon to innovate their own product and get it to market much faster). So if and when Ubuntu makes a bone head move that angers the community.... the community has negotiating leverage to say "fix it or you risk large number of community members and contributors to company X" who has been working on the same code. It's easy for the consumer because it is all interpolatable. The point is that a system could be created with food where the companies who produce the food and do the research truly work for the communities in this way or the community decides to take their business to the provider who will fall in line. For this to work the recipe and process need to be shared openly and publicly licensed. As in if you decide to use this information in your company (rather than starting from scratch) you are legally obligated must publish and share your changes when the product is released. An example of this is that Ubuntu's new interface on the desktop bothers me. I have many choices. I can grab an alternative desktop interface with one click (supported by Ubuntu because the community demands it) and it just drops onto Ubuntu like a glove and fixes my problem. Or if I'm really pissed for some reason I can change my distribution entirely to say Fedora Linux and everything works just as it should with a choice of other desktop interfaces. No sweat to me but for Ubuntu they better hope they don't make too many people mad and they innovate to keep ahead of the competition or they could face a mass exodus. If the food industry could be made to be this accountable they would truly be working for us as it should be.
