Country has had problems since Fidel took over of course. Starting with covid economy worsened. Most of the available food/medicine/clothing supplies Cubans have access to come from other Cubans who travel to/from USA, Panama, Mexico and Russia and bring back as much as possible for their families and to sell. Cuban government reduced this due to covid and there was virtually nothing coming in. They opened tourism for Russians without any covid restrictions. Infections rates and variants are rampant and government blamed Cubans first and then became silent. Government changed currency twice. Our existing currency is complicated. There’s nothing in the stores. Hospitals don’t have anything. People go to hospitals and die in the hallways due to lack of even food. Starting a few months ago the covid situation in one of the provinces, Matanzas (where Varadero beach is) got out of control (allegedly due to incoming Russians tourists). Daily death toll continues to rise, but the saddest part is that there are no medications available no matter if you have money or not. On top of that the government is doing blackouts due to shortage of fuel. People in Cuba started using Twitter fairly recently (months/few years) compared to the rest of the world. In Sunday people started leaving their houses and protesting peacefully against all the hardships and demanding the president steps out. The rest of the country started to learn about these protests and unprecedentedly thousands of people throughout the country protested. This had never happened due to fears of being killed by the government. The government sent the police, special military units and dressed trucks and trucks of military soldiers with civilian clothes. They shot unarmed civilians with pistols and rifles. They brought clubs and started beating people up. And they started throwing stones at the protesters. There are confirmed death civilians and many many injured. You can watch the pictures and videos in Twitter and judge by yourself. The government cut off internet Sunday evening and started combing through Twitter to identify everybody who had shared messages or videos pro freedom. They sent the police to arrest them Monday through today. Today the president announced that as a a measure to help, that the country’s customs would not levy tax on incoming food or medicine from anybody. This is a small gesture they could have done before and they had refused. If internet access is fully restored and not cut off again, I hope people can organize again and go out on the streets. The great majority of high profile Cuban artists, writers and performers have urged the government (dictatorship, nobody elected them) to stop the violence. The Cuban people are trying to compile a database of all the people who have been killed or kidnapped (Pinochet style), and another public database of police officers and soldiers who are killing civilians. Again, you may follow the hashtag SOSCUBA and judge by yourself.
