I believe it is becoming more more fucked, because the internet has reduced our need - and ultimately our capacity - to regulate our own behaviors. It's true that all of the shit we see out in the open today existed yesterday, but it will always exist. People hid the more reprehensible aspects of their personality, because they were sensitive to the court of public opinion. Today, there's a support group available 24/7 for every negative idea or behavior, and people seem to feel MUCH less compunction to regulate that behavior.

I don't think we can completely eliminate any specific negative social belief or behavior (such as racism), but society exists to mitigate and manage those things... and what we are seeing (in my opinion) is a breakdown of society's functional ability to regulate itself.
