Twitter experiment shows clear self-selection into social media “echo chambers” due to political preferences. Users are 3 times more likely to follow others they are aligned with in political terms. This suggests the lack of cross-partisan relationships on social media isn’t only due to algorithms.

Yeah of course I wouldn't follow Trump, Graham, McConnell, or anyone in that orbit, for instance. Why would I want to get pissed off every day by people who are only going to lie and insult me?

But that's the result of the content, not because of an echo chamber. There's no reason to follow something lacking in substance. The algorithm wouldn't help in that case because it's not done for the sake of being polarizing - it's done with intent to avoid the BS that is rampant on that disaster of a site. No amount of recommending people "across the aisle" is going to do anything for me, so I really wonder if it's going to do anything for anyone else. Most people don't want to associate at all - and, given how toxic Twitter is, no surprise there.

When they find a way to eliminate all the lying and conspiracy nonsense, then their conclusion will make more sense.
