Twitter users are escaping online hate by switching profiles to Germany, where Nazism is illegal

American redditors have all kinds of fantasies about what Western Europe is like. They’ll shit their pants if you tell them Germany doesn’t have single payer healthcare.

Trying to explain this is the bane of my existence as an American who has lived in Europe. Each country has a different healthcare system with different ways to reach universal coverage. Single payer is not a synonym for universal healthcare. It describes a certain type of system.

Also, just because it’s illegal to be a Nazi in Germany doesn’t mean you can’t be a Nazi in all but name only. Instead of waving the Nazi flag, they will wave the flag of the German Empire. Whether you like it or not, Germany still has free speech.
