/u/corey_m_snow shares their experience in the Gulf War.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. How many movies and shows critical of war, and portraying the horrors of Vietnam came out in the decade or two after? Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Good Morning Vietnam, hell even MASH was clearly about Vietnam and not Korea. Think about the graphic photos and videos coming out from there directly from American newscasters.

Now think about Iraq and Afghanistan, which we've been in so much longer. How often do we get footage of the war? What movies and shows have there been? Hurt Locker and Jarhead are the two I can think of. There was a post a few years back from someone working in journalism about how the DoD and military put tighter restrictions on where journalists could go and what they could do, specifically to avoid what happened in Vietnam where the public was mortified by what they saw and turned on the "cause".
