The federal government does not have any power to override a state constitution, at least insofar as statutes that do not directly contravene the US constitution. What recourse would Trump and McConnell even have if Pritzker decided to ignore their 'orders'?

You are basically talking about a scenario where Trump would be ordering hundreds of thousands of Illinoisans to completely ignore and debase the laws of their sovereign state, to completely ignore and debase the laws of their union, and just do whatever he says instead. And then hundreds of thousands of people working in the federal government would all also have to go along with that. I mean, I know the last 4 years have been crazy, but they haven't been that crazy*.
