There's short term profit profit to be made in preventing it as well—green technology still needs developers, manufacturers, sellers and so on. The barrier to climate acceptance has always been political, not financial. You can't say that coal is killing the planet without sacrificing West Virginia, you can't come down on big oil without threatening massive numbers of jobs in Texas and any number of other states—possibly enough to flip an election. It is politically expedient to pretend the issue is still open because it's easier to avoid losing voters you already have than it is to convince people your plan will make them better off in the long run.
