UFC on Instagram: "The UFC family is saddened by the passing of UFC Hall of Famer Stephan Bonnar. We send our sincerest condolences to his family and friends."

I didn't say we should pay them $30k per year, but there's a pretty big range of numbers between that and $30+ million per year. Yes, I understand the concept of why they get paid so much, and I'm not blaming the athletes for that, I'm saying that our priorities are fucked up by spending so much more money on watching people play sports versus things much more beneficial.

And yeah, fighting is not a game, so maybe hobby or another word would have been better, but most sports are not fighting so that's why I went with the word. I fought competitively, and most of it was unpaid, I knew I was never going to get good enough to support myself with it, but I did it anyway because I enjoyed it. Obviously at the highest level, you need to be doing it as your career, and you need to be paid enough to do so. But in my opinion, there's no reason why athletes should automatically be immune to the possibility of having to get another job when they're 35, 40, etc years old. Sure, they should have made enough money to have plenty of time to find a career, or to study for one, but people shouldn't realistically be teenagers or 20-something year olds thinking "I just need to make it in this sport and I'm set for life."
