The UK Will Make It Easier For Trans People To Legally Change Their Gender

Well the passports are really easy to get. Deed poll and a letter to say you're trans. Boom. I got mine this way. (plus the normal passport stuff/name change stuff- birth cert, parents marriage license copy slip thingy and signed photograph) Letter has to be from a gender therapist though.

As for needing surgery for a gender certificate, they're wrong with that too. You need at least two years as female (or male if you're FtM) with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.‎

Also gender certificates cost £140 which you need for a tonne of stuff, most importantly a new birth certificate in new name and gender.

But yes, paperwork is really not good in the UK for trans people, it's a real hassle.

National insurance can be changed so you have two identities for one number with only having certain people to access the previous gender. It's not as good as being able to seal your previous records but it's close until you can get the Gender Recognition cert. This will require a diagnosis of dysphoria and a deed poll.

But yeah. If you want a GRC be prepared to dig up as much paperwork from the last two years or have had surgery and pay the £140.

‎ Also the bank took fucking months and many meetings until someone just went in on my behalf and tore them a new one. I got a meeting the next week and it was changed.

Finally there's the education certificates (I think Americans call them minors/majors- but the ones you get in school too). Most colleges will scan them and hand them back. I always hand mine in with a deed poll. sees previous, very male, name *"T-these aren't...are you sure these are your certificates? " *I point to name change document "ohhh. Ahh.Right. I see. I'll uhh...yeah..take these to get photocopied please?" (actual quote).I've also had akward stares from other colleges. ‎ ‎ ‎ New certificates I get are always in my new name but I still have to grab the previous ones in my new name.

Passport wise with only the letter from the gender clinic and a deed poll it states my new name and gender. It doesn't mention anywhere on the chip or passport my previous name or gender. I have my little F :D ‎ ‎ ‎ The worst is the waiting times in the UK for treatment... :( and stupid policies I've done RLE for two years but hey! Not important because I've not been on a puberty blocker for a year yet. I'm an adult. Once I've done a year on the blockers then I can grab some oestrogen. Not kidding :/ the letter saying I'll be waiting at least a year for treatment (on priority waiting list too!) just points me towards a transgender wiki whilst my previous gender clinic/endocrine guys are like "sorry. It's protocol. Gotta be a year on blockers." I did say by that point I'll have killed myself but hey ho doesn't change their minds. At least by the end of the year they'll give E if I don't get in a GIC. Hopefully. ‎ ‎

Got off track but yeah. The UK sucks for this stuff. Except passports. That's easy. Ish. Just a diagnosis of gender dysphoria+ deed poll and you're good to go. Don't even need to wait any time or have surgery. ‎ ‎ Also yay for you if you hand in previous genders  education certificate they just might hand you a disabled key for the toilets. Not kidding. Actually happened.  ‎

*Info:‎ ‎ ‎ Deedpoll - free but people tend to question home made ones. I think there's a site now for free print outs that look proffesional.

Passport: diagnosis of gender dysphoria + deed poll. Does NOT require surgery or waiting times bar the time for a diagnosis

National insurance: special section D. Diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

Gender recognition certificate: At least two years as your gender with letters and proof such as letters from the bank or NHS. Plus a diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Forms to be filled by gender therapist only (it's literally a form to say which medication you're on but noooo don't dare think for a second a endocrine nurse or even a doctor can fill that out! Not even fucking kidding. Like, wtf). Surgery isn't required but I think you don't need to wait two years if you have it- good fucking luck with that. Two years and I'm not even on E. ‎ Costs £140. Also the chance that they just say nope and you won't even get your £140 back. Then you're kinda fucked. Maybe go to another country, get citizenship and then grab a new birth cert?? *‎ ‎ ‎ Hope this info's useful. It's taken me over two years to acquire. A quick Google search will bring up most of this. No one ever mentioned special section D. I only found out through a trans person. Don't worry about passports, they're easy to get now.

‎ With the state of things here I'm not surprised 50% of trans people attempt suicide with 40% of trans people successfully killing themselves.

Yay. ‎
