Unconfidence Rants!

My profession is social justice. That's to say, I'm a consultant, a writer and a social justice advocate, and most of my work is done for nonprofits and foundations whose cause is social justice.

Allow me to educate you on one small point: much social justice work is done by privileged folk who are aware of their privilege and are working to share the privileges that they were either born with, or acquired during their lifetime, with others.

Some of those people are very rich people who are not happy about income inequity and actively work to find, protest against, and legally change the conditions that create and promote social injustice.

You and KiA are wrapping yourselves into knots about a $400 backpack??? That's both naive and disingenuous.

If every social justice advocate was required--by some non-existent social justice contract--to never purchase luxury goods, to give all earnings exceeding minimum wage to charity, to never even have a cocktail or play a video game (as those aren't absolute necessities), that would basically shut down justice for everybody.

There aren't 'requirements' to care about people less fortunate. The people who do so, do so of their own free will. When you, and people who share your view (certain KiA posters, for example), piss on folk who are pro social justice, you're basically pissing on the cause.

You can talk all you like about how cheap your computer was, and how you never buy video games, but, really? You're on a computer and you play video games. So you're a lot more privileged than many of the people for whom I advocate (at either reduced or pro bono rates). My advocacy actually helps those people. And my bag (which I've had for 15 years) cost a hell of a lot more than $400.

I have no problem with the fact that you wrote the post rather than simply frothing at the mouth. But I'd ask you to try to understand that the world is much more complex than what you perceive it to be.
