[Undercity, below Mitras, July 3rd/4th] White Tree part 2.5: The Fire

Daniel had to feel the slightest bit relieved that the whole hullabaloo he, Mary, and Theo had had to go through just to convince Rising Sun House to not kill them, let alone listen to their proposal, had actually ended up being worth their while. In honesty, most of the credit was owed to Klaus' diplomacy, but Daniel suspected he'd just wave it off an say it was nothing, even if someone tried to give him credit. Hell, though. They'd pulled through and gotten themselves the support of... ten thousand people. Ten thousand sun-deprived, impoverished, sick people, but still ten thousand people.

The lot of them had been assigned to the cannon-slash-assassination team, probably because they'd done a good job killing Holt, as well as killing anyone who got in their way, in general. Now they squinted around themselves in the dank, dark sewers. The rank smell of sewage permeated the air, and something green and slimy coated the walls and floor, making the area somewhat slippery. Thankfully, no half-rotten human remains were around to be seen. At least not within the circles of faint illumination provided by the occasional lantern-bearer among them.

Already a bit up ahead them, Daniel spied Eric Thomas, who he recognized by the unmistakable glint of metal from his right arm. The man seemed somewhat tensed, perhaps feeling the effects of the day's stress. Recalling that Eric had been friendly enough (not to mention a great strategic asset), Daniel decided to do a somewhat rare thing and reach out to him. He cupped his hands around his mouth and called out in a voice just loud enough to carry.

"Aye, Eric, you on cannon duty, too?"
