"The United states will never be taken by a foreign army. Guess why. Because our our average gun enthusiasts are better armed than most armies"

There's a third possibility that's probably even more likely. At least if by "destroy ourselves" you mean some sort of civil war or nuclear exchange.

The US breaks apart in slow motion, mostly peacefully, and not all at once. Or it evolves into a different political entity over time.

It could be politics and cultural changes that we don't see in 2016, but totally make sense in 2116 that cause the US to break into successor states; it could be massive shifts in population and capital caused by global warming and flooding that make forming "New England" or "Cascadia" more advantageous than continuing to be a part of the United States, it could even be a reorganization in how the US operates that essentially makes it a different country than the United States of today.

For the most part, I think the Americas are frozen in their territorial/political organization. There's no big push for change that would make whatever successor state or enlarged nation better off without massive negative repercussions.
