University 'turned down politically incorrect transgender research'

Ok, the first part about people thinking you don't need dysphoria to be trans is another issue. The professional opinion I've encountered is that they should be considered semantically separate from those who are "medically trans" or "i'm in the wrong body trans", without going into the shitstorm of whether they're ~Actually Transgender~ or not.

But about the second part - there's a reason people generally need a doctor's note for HRT. They generally need to have dysphoria too. If we find that current diagnosis methods are flawed then we try to change them to be more accurate. I doubt the mistake rate could ever realistically be anywhere near as high a figure as you suggest, because if it crept near even 20% all the gender clinics would have reacted by now.

Nobody will give people they know will be "fucked up" by transition a doctor's letter just to not offend the real trans people (who are increasingly aware of and not offended by the notion that there may be misguided hrt seekers out there). That would be stupid and dangerous. Why are you suggesting that anyone in the medical community would be in favor of "keeping the status quo" by not do anything about misdiagnosis and giving people who don't need medical transition the means to transition? I think you're a bit paranoid in imagining the PC Police.

I was actually surprised by the headline alone, because I know that there have been studies done about detransition before, but I suggest you at least read the top comments explaining how it's more complicated and isn't a "PC University Doesn't Believe In Science" story. It's a "MA student with questionable credentials and questionable intentions bites more than he can chew". Trust me, science is more skewed by multinational coorporations trying to sell corn syrup than angry gender activists.
