Unpopular opinion: The more population the less social it is.

I can relate and agree with this. When I played FF14 and WoW I felt like people avoided each other (even found myself guilty of it) till you were forced to interact in a raid or dungeon. I didn't have this issue in games like SWTOR and STO, however looking back it could have been because those games were smaller and people hunted down others to join guilds and do content more. Where games like WoW or FF14 it's so big people would rather just spam invites instead of sending a tell/whisper and striking up a conversation.

I remember trying out a WoW vanilla private server for a bit and was actually surprised when someone invited me to a group in a lowbi area. Then happen to invite me again the next day when that person noticed I was in the same area as them. Where in retail that doesn't really happen anymore. I think the main problem is all the big games are more casual so the social part of it isn't as huge as it once was, when in some cases is a blessing if you like to solo. However it does kind of kill the need to interact with people for common goals.
