The problem with your hero's journey here is that most of the time SHTF is an applicable scenario, you are facing mandatory evacuation coupled with police in an emergency or martial law scenario.

Cops don't like you being there after mandatory evacuation.

Cops really don't like you having guns after mandatory evacuation.

You're not going to fight off a fucking 'riot' with your AR and sidearm. They'll mob you and literally tear you limb from limb, the better option is to simply accept it and live. Or they'll burn the building down with you still inside. That's always fun.

As someone who's been through a couple of the super fun hurricanes and some other bad weather, most of the time the looting is done well before you return to your home. By the time you're going back in, the weather has ruined anything looters would want anyway.
